My name is Deirdre Griffin. When you've led a vampire's existence for as long as I have -- attempting to satiate an unquenchable thirst while hostile beings seek your destruction -- you're grateful for a place to call home. Manhattan was my home, and home to those like myself in the Cadre until a group of immortals known as the Others targeted us for extinction.

It has been three years since my lover Mitch and I fled new York, but the Others have been relentless in their pursuit. With very little money or patience left, we've opened shop in the seaside town of Whitby with The Black Rose -- a pub ripe for tourist dollars -- and tourist blood.

I know this is only a temporary respite...as the Others close in yet again, our situation grows more desperate. But there may be a way out. Mitch believes a human mother and her mute child are the key to thwarting our enemies. I can see he is drawn to the pair, and I intend to uncover the reason for Mitch's strange attraction.
