Scarcely out of college with an honors degree in microbiology, Tracy Townsend lands a job as a research assistant at the Cape Kennedy Space Center, where pre-flight activity for the launching of Apollo 10 is in full swing.

But her important research duties for the space program are by no means all Tracy's new life situation has in store for her. When a vital report she has completed is mysteriously destroyed -- or sabotages -- she is warned by a friendly male admirer and co-worker, Doctor John Malone, that Lucile Henderson, the office stenographer, may well be behind the report's destruction. His argument is convincing, and Lucile's implacable hostility toward her seems to confirm Tracy's own suspicions regarding her officemate's capacity for malice.

And when Tracy learns that Lucile has indeed succeeded in jeopardizing her relationship with her serious beau Rock Lancer, the handsome owner of a pleasure cruise line, she knows that she must solve the riddle of Lucile's behavior toward her, or else risk seeing her beloved job and romance with Rock crumble to ashes.
