A mysterious disappearance leads to an unexpected inheritance of wealth, romance, and terror.

Although the old fashioned charm of Louisburg Square in Boston's Beacon Hill district allayed some of the fear felt by Better Carelli, a stranger in a strange land, she soon found that the outward tranquility was misleading. Stertorous breathing and wheezing formed a harsh accompaniment to a danse macabre which disturbed her dreams and in which red hooded phantoms, book collectors and art lovers mingled in an incongruous array.
