Kate Howard goes to India determined above all else to be a nurse. Both her father and her two brothers are doctors. Instead of being at the Sivanjee Mission with Sister O'Hara as she had expected, she finds herself in a makeshift out-station working alongside Doctor Edward Allan.

Doctor Allan is as dedicated to his work as Kate is to hers. There seems to be no time for a human relationship between them. Their efforts are vital to the well-being of the people that they have both come to love. Even so, Kate gradually becomes aware of the wonderful personality of the doctor.

John Wynguard, fully aware of Kate as a woman rather than a nurse, does not hide his admiration. Kate finds him very attractive in spite of herself. Her friend Abdul Saccour chides her gently when she sends John away, for he believes that there should be more to life than a sustained effort of work.

Kate finds that Doctor Allan is stronger than she is where love is concerned. Defiantly she goes to the hills to the tribal area even though she knows that trouble is brewing, and that there is danger of death. Far below in Norajainee, Doctor Allan had to determine which is more important, dedication or love. John Wynguard has already made his decision.
