Nurse April's Dilemma — Jane McCarthy

April Haversham's position as nurse-companion to Aunt Mary Haversham was banishment in disguise -- for the dark-haired, violet-eyed April had disgraced the lofty family name. The heady dinner date with darkly handsome Dr. Mark Alexander, the new surgeon at Montero Hospital, had afforded no hint of impending tragedy. Unbeknownst to April, Mark was married; and his wife's subsequent well-publicized suicide caused the young nurse, wracked by nightmarish self-accusations, to resign her post at the hospital.

Recognizing in April's misery the perfect opportunity to further their own ends, her greedy relatives dispatched her to Haversham Heights, the family estate in a pine scented Northern California forest, to keep an eye on eccentric Aunt Mary. Since the death of her influential husband Aunt Mary had held the family purse strings, and her prospective heirs were determined to keep their rightful inheritance out of the hands of “that itinerant gospel singer” of whom the old lady was so fond.

Even April could conjure little affection for Rett Bryant, and she was sure that the dark-moustached stranger harbored a mutual antipathy toward her. And yet, she had seen the secretive, laconic man perform acts of gentle kindness.

Who was Rett Bryant? Could she trust him? All too soon, as a chain of unusual occurrences imperiled the peaceful seclusion of Havershan Heights, April would have to take the chance.
