As Ree Randolph drives along the highway toward Forestdale, Florida, to live with Cousin Natalie in an old family mansion, she is slightly aware of the transport trucks that pass her along her route. She does not realize how much a part of her future life they will become.

At arriving at the run-down, rambling old house, her keen anticipation of her life in the big city turns to sharp disappointment. This house is clearly not what she expected. And the man who greets her at the door is another unexpected surprise; she had no idea that her cousin took in boarders. This boarder turns out to be a transportation lawyer who offers Ree her first job.

Immediately thrust into the excitement of a court hearing. Ree finds herself not only very much involved with her exacting job but also becoming more interested in her employer. She soon learns that her feeling of gratitude and friendship is deepening into love.

Afraid that this newfound emotion will cause a rift between Natalie and herself, she is determined to come to grips with the mysterious events that are occurring at the old mansion and learn just exactly what kind of relationship Nat shares with the transport lawyer.
