WHO IS FATHER HAYES -- AND WHY DOES HE HAVE TO PAY THE DEVIL HIS DUE?
Father Christian Francis Hayes, SJ, is, plain and simply, and Exorcist…one of the best there is. He has no parish nor pulpit, but lives in a cottage on Cape Cod, not far from the site where is ancestors were burned at the stake three centuries ago, when Salem was purging itself of witches, waiting for his next assignment from the Church.
Now he is being sent to a small town on the French Riviera, not by the Church, but by the United States government , to investigate the strange goings-on in an order of American-born nuns in a French convent. Are these babbling, sex-crazed, heretical women truly possessed by the Devil? Or is there another, deeper -- perhaps man-made -- force of Evil at work?
