So as to forget the private cancer patient who had just died, Marjory Mallon applied for duty at Southern Emergency Hospital in a slum section of the city and threw herself into the demanding job with single-minded zeal.

This baffled her late patient's son, who wanted to marry the nurse and felt that Marjory, if she did not accept, should at least pine away becomingly. It likewise puzzled young Dr. Stedman, who hid an intense dedication under a cloak of carefree flirtatiousness. Only Dr. Carl Compton, who was Marjory's immediate superior and who was known as the "Computor" because of his rigid attitude toward patient and staff alike, seemed to be unaware that his nurse was different from any other girl in white.

Inevitably, Marjory was intrigued by his dispassionate indifference.
