Josette DeCourcy had been the Number One debutante of Clarksville, Pennsylvania; she was the reigning beauty of the younger set; she was engaged to a rising young attorney, with the approval of both their families. Her skies should have been blue and her vistas rosy. Yet she felt some vague dissatisfaction with the futility of her life; an undefined impulse to be of service in some more concrete way than by supporting charity benefits.

When the car driven by her fiancé hit and almost killed a poor old man, the incident charted Josette's future course. She fled Clarksville and began a course in practical nursing in Chicago. Once she had her certificate, Josette planned to return home to work in the hospital there. Thus she intended not only to satisfy her desire for dedication, but also to prove to a certain brilliant young doctor that she was more than an empty-headed butterfly.
