It seemed lucky for Maggie Wellen that she met the man in the cafe that dreary afternoon as she was stopping to fortify herself in her efforts to get a start on Broadway. She was discouraged; breaking into the theatre was proving harder than she had imagined. But when the man advised her to try Paul Horvath, Maggie's spirits rose.

Horvath, a Hungarian freedom fighter, refugee, and one of the top producers in New York, has a play opening soon starring the famous Sybilla Saunders and her ex-husband Evan Evans, whom Sybilla has especially asked to play opposite her (much to the displeasure of her TV-hero husband, Blair). One part remains to be filled; Maggie not only gets it , but is hired as Assistant Stage Manager as well.

But her delight soon vanishes when she realizes she has entered a world of intense rivalry and jealousy. And as this world is invaded by Communist spies, F.B.I. agents, and killers, Maggie finds her first theatre job has landed her in the middle of international intrigue and murder.
