Hoping to ease her grief over her father's fatal boating accident, Janice Eberly decided to join her friend Beth Saunders for a week's vacation at Ocean View Resort. Built in the nineteenth century, containing one hundred splendid rooms and surrounded by magnificent grounds and beaches, the estate promised Janice a fun-filled holiday.

To complete the requirements for an enjoyable vacation were congenial fellow guests, including Beth's boyfriend, Hal Graham, and his black-haired companion, Greg Loring. Always quick to matchmake, Beth eagerly drew Janice and Greg together. Amused but embarrassed, Janice enjoyed Greg's company but had no illusions about him. He was the casual, no-strings-attached type, definitely a loner and a heartbreaker.

But all too soon Janice had more on her mind than Greg as inexplicable events began to alter her plans for relaxation. When she reported having seen a vicious black dog from her window late at night, she was told that there were no dogs in the vicinity. And when her Polaroid snapshots of the grounds revealed a surly male face almost hidden in the shrubbery, she grew alarmed--especially when no one on the island could identify the face.

Yet it was a face somehow familiar to Janice--if she could only locate its proper context in her memory. Her recollections proved to be her downfall as the carefree holiday rapidly assumed all the trappings of a nightmare.
