During her growing-ups years, Julie Bliss had been overshadowed by a mother who made her mark first as a concert singer, then as a civic leader. As a result, Julie had never really matured emotionally or developed any real sense of her own identity. So she clung romantically to her fixation for Pat Reilly, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks whom she had loved at sixteen. After her mother rather ruthlessly ruined that romance, Julie had been unable to fall in love again, although seven years had passed.

Now, at last, she had met a man, come to visit in Jewel Bay, who attracted her and seemed attracted to her. However, Julie, locked in the dungeon of her self-imposed isolation, could not believe that he was really interested in her rather than in her mother, and refused to open her wayward heart to him.
