“You were really on your way to meet me!” Tis had told Jane Lambolt that first night they met, when he had almost knocked her down bumping into her.

Tips was Flight-Lieutenant T. Poel-Sanders of the R.A.F.; Tips the dauntless, Tips the irresistible, who had broken as many hearts as he had shot down Messerchmitts. Women seemed drawn to him like moths to a flame. Jane also felt the inevitableness of their association and for that reason she ran away from him that first night, after the theater. After all, she was joining the Waafs in the morning. There would be no time for affair of the heart -- she thought.

It was through Stella, her roommate and best friend, that Jane discovered Tips was the man to whom Stella had been married for six unhappy months, a marriage that had ended in a messy divorce. Tips was responsible for Stella's bitterness these last four years. Right now his name was being linked with frivolous Iris Stanton, wife of one of his fellow-fliers. “Rotten through and through,” Stella described Tips, but one she admitted she had never really fallen out of love with him.

Jane was in love with Tips -- that she could not deny. But did he love her or was this merely another of his well-known affairs? Jane also had Clive Forbes to consider. Clive was an old flame, and interesting, even though his proposals were seldom legitimate.

Luckily, Jane's work in the Waafs provided an escape -- until Tips was transferred to the aerodrome at which she was stationed.
