Zoe Carter is left alone to raise her baby, Mark, after his father, James, is killed before their intended marriage. James's parents, the Nivens, soon make it clear that they want control of Mark's life. Zoe runs away with Mark to Cornwall and finds work as a housekeeper to an eccentric invalid, Charles.
