Sheriff Caleb Stensrude of Soldahl, North Dakota, is almost glad he has nowhere to go on this Christmas Eve. Temperatures are dropping, snowdrifts are mounting, and the winds are howling something fierce. A blizzard's brewing, and all living things should be inside.

And then his faithful dog Sam senses they have company.
