Two of Valley Falls's most conniving citizens try to force Coach Rockwell into retirement. But what do a Valley High alumnus and a loudmouthed sportswriter hope to gain by releasing their community's star senior baseball coach? Strange things are afoot in the peaceful town of Valley Falls.

As part of a class project, Chip is elected mayor-for-day. He discovers how badly the city government is mismanaged and teaches the citizens of Valley Falls a lesson in civic responsibility. But when an innocent autograph leads to trouble, it is Chip who is disciplined, leaving the Big Reds' star athlete stranded in the dugout. Will Chip find a way into the state tournament? Or will Valley Falls's top player be forced into early retirement as well?
